How to Install Brake Pads: A Step-by-Step Guide

  • Installing brake pads is an important maintenance task for your vehicle's safety. In this article, we'll walk you through the step-by-step process of how to replace brake pads. We'll cover everything from removing the old pads to properly bedding in the new ones. We'll also provide some tips on how to prevent premature wear on your brake pads.


  • Make sure you have the right tools for the job: a lug wrench, jack, jack stands, C-clamp, and a socket set.

  • Loosen the lug nuts and jack up the car to remove the wheels.

  • Remove the caliper bolts and slide the caliper off the rotor.

  • Use a C-clamp to compress the piston in the caliper to make room for the new pads.

  • Remove the old pads and replace them with the new ones.

  • Slide the caliper back over the rotor and reattach the bolts.

  • Repeat for the other side of the car.

  • Pump the brake pedal to restore pressure to the brake system.

  • Bed in the new brake pads by gradually increasing speed and braking force over several cycles.
